Building a go cart may seem complex, but it can be done through a number of simple steps.
Steps to Build a Go Cart
- Design your go cart. Visualize how it should look like. Make a sketch and determine the size of its major parts. You may need to make a few revisions before you cam come up with the final design. Alternatively, you can get one of the go cart plans sold in hobby stores.
- Purchase the materials. The materials will vary depending on your own design.
Required Materials
•square tubing,
•round steel barstock,
•pieces of wood or metal for the cart’s frame
- Cut the steel tubing based on your design.
- Weld the pieces together. If you do not know how to weld, you may hire a professional welder to do this step. Remember to use a gusset in each corner. This will make the welds much stronger.
- Assemble the steering linkage. You should use steel rods for each linkage. Steel rods can also be used for the cart’s axles. Do not rush this process as steering is very important. To keep the structure in tact, use washers and cotter pins, and mount your axle onto the bushings. Then install the drive pulley on the axle.
- Build the engine and drive belt. Use the remaining steel rod in creating your rear axle. Attach two bushings to the frame of the cart.
- Weld a steel plate on the frame’s rear. Then place the engine on the plate. Connect your throttle cable with the hand throttle. Finally, you can work on the seat and floorboards.
- Paint the go cart when it is fully assembled.
