Steps to Build a Dog Box for a Truck
- You need to know what your dog needs in a dog box. Based on the size of your dog, determine how big the box should be. If your dog tends to move a lot, you may want to give it extra space to move in. Regardless of the type of dog you have, the box also needs to have good ventilation.
- Choose the material for your dog box. Aircraft aluminum is the most ideal material for dog boxes. This is a very lightweight and sturdy product. Alternatively, you can choose wood and vinyl.
- Cut the material. The measurements for the walls, ceiling, and floor of the dog box depend on the size of your dog and the plans you have made. An average dog box is 24′ to 25′ wide, 39′ to 40′ long, and 22′ to 24′ tall. All in all, you need six pieces. This includes the door where the dog can enter. Drill small holes in the walls to provide ventilation. Take the piece for the floor and attach latches to it. The latches will be used to secure the box to the truck’s floor.
- Assemble the pieces. If you used metal, weld the pieces together. If you used wood, secure the pieces together with nuts and bolts. Installing the door should be the final part in assembling the box.
