Learning how to build a brick wall will allow you to segregate sections in your garden more easily. You can also use it to define a planting area. Plan and gather everything you need first.
Required Tools and Materials
Bricks or stones
Builder’s sand
Saw with masonry blade
Shovel
Adhesive for masonry
Tamper
Hose (for area definition)
String
PVC pipe (if you want to make a drainage system)
Screen
Define the Area
Use the garden hose to get an idea of the size. If necessary use a measuring tape to get the right height. Clear the area of any rocks or plants. If there are any debris it will make digging harder and more complicated.
Digging
The initial step to build a brick wall is excavating the area. Get rid of the grass and any weeds around the hose line. This could be 18” or so. It will depend on the width of the wall. When making a trench it should be half a foot wider than the wall. Dig a hole deep enough to fit a brick. By making the initial course underground, stability is added to the structure.
Note: this is for an even surface. If the landscape is slanted, add steps to balance the surface. Use the tamper if needed.
Setting the Base and Drainage
Pour a couple of inches of sand into the hole. Wet it just a little. Use a level to flatten everything. Now you can put in the PVC pipe as you build a brick wall. Cut a 1” pipe. It should be about 18” in length. Set it above the trench you dug. You can put coarse screens at both ends to prevent clogging.
Adding the Bricks
Begin putting the bricks in place. They need to be aligned correctly. If needed use a string. When the first layer is done, put some mortar. Spread it evenly. Put on more bricks. Add as many as needed until you reach the desired height. When putting in additional layers make them overlap one another. This step is very important. Additional strength is added by aligning them in this manner.
Adding Capstones
This step is optional when you build a brick wall.
When you reach the next to last level, add the capstones instead of the bricks. If needed use adhesive to set them in place.
Tips
Check the city / town regulations regarding construction of projects like this. If it’s just a low wall it probably isn’t necessary. But it’s best to be certain. You should also avoid digging in areas where there are pipes.
There are different brick materials available in stores. You should shop around and take a look at several before buying. The same thing can be said for capstones.
Consider wearing protective eye gear. This is needed if you need to hammer the bricks into shape. Some would also wear a mask.
As long you take the right steps, the process will not take long. Even without experience, learning to build a brick wall is something anyone with patience can do.
