How to Potty Train a Puppy

Puppies are cute, but also a big responsibility. Learning how to potty train them effectively can make your time together much more fun.

Required Materials

  • Dog collar
  • Leash
  • Edible dog treats

Instructions

  1. Puppies need to relieve themselves frequently. The basic rule is that your puppy’s bladder can hold urine up to one hour for every month old your puppy is. So, if your puppy is 3 months old he will need to go out every three hours. Keeping to this schedule will help your puppy avoid accidents in the home.
  2. Use the same door each time you take your puppy out to potty. Also, take your puppy to the same location. This will help the puppy avoid becoming distracted by new stimuli. It will also establish a routine to the purpose of the trip.
  3. Always use a leash when taking your puppy out to potty. This will help keep the puppy from getting distracted and wandering about. To help establish the purpose of the trip, it is important to differentiate this from play.
  4. Give your puppy positive reinforcement when the relieves himself outside. Positive words and edible treats are appropriate reinforcement tools. When your puppy goes to the bathroom, give him treats and praise him with phrases such as, “Good Boy.” Do not give him too many treats, just a couple to show that he is being rewarded.
  5. Yelling at a puppy does no real good toward potty training. If you see your puppy sniffing or acting like he is going to relieve himself inside, gently lift him and bring him outside. If your puppy does have an accident inside, make sure you thoroughly clean the area so no odor remains. Your puppy may continue to relieve himself in an area that carries the odor of past accidents.
