How to Write a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement gives an essay or article direction. It draws the reader in by explaining the author’s beliefs about a subject. Thesis statements can help you write argumentative, analytical or explanatory papers.

Required Materials

  • Paper

Required Tools

  • Pencil
  • Computer
  • Printer

Instructions

  1. Determine what your thoughts are about the topic you must write about. Write a list of statements, ideas, opinions and theories you have regarding the subject of your paper.
  2. Determine if you want to write an argumentative paper, analytical paper or an explanatory paper. An argumentative paper has a thesis that makes a statement about a subject, which the writer attempts to persuasively prove throughout the paper. An analytical paper analyzes a subject and breaks it down. An explanatory paper explains all the details about a topic.
  3. Once you’ve chosen the tone for your paper, look through your list of thoughts and choose the one which most fits the tone of your paper (argumentative, analytical or explanatory) and the information you wish to cover. Make sure that you have data to back up your thesis or that you have analyzed the situation enough to form statements within the paper that will support your thesis.
  4. Write this statement down and shape it to fit the tone of your paper. Make the statement concrete and unquestionable. Make sure that it clearly sets the tone and intention for your paper.
