How to Zip a File
If you have a large file, you can reduce its size by zipping it. Zipping a file can be useful if you want to upload a large file, email a large file or need additional memory space on your computer.
To Zip a File on Windows:
- Download a program that allows you to zip and unzip files. For a free Windows program that allows you to zip and unzip files, download FreeZip
- Complete the installation of FreeZip on your computer.
- Once FreeZip is installed, it will appear in the shortcut menu that pops up when you right-click a file.
- Choose the file that you would like to zip and right-click it. On the shortcut menu, select the Zip option.
- Once you select the Zip option, FreeZip will automatically zip the file for you.
- Once FreeZip has zipped the file for you, you can upload, email, store or do any other action you want with the zipped file.
- If you need to unzip that or any other zip file, you can do so by right-clicking and selecting the UnZip Here option from the shortcut menu.
To Zip a File on Mac OS X
- Download YemuZip , which is a free tool for Mac that let’s you create zip files.
- Complete the installation of YemuZip on your computer by opening the .dmg file and dragging the YemuZip file into your applications folder. Double click YemuZip to open the program.
- If you would like to save the files you zip in a different location, click the dialog box that says “Same as Source” and select the location where you would like the files to be saved.
- Drag and drop the file you want to zip into the Drop Files Here area.
- Enter the name you want your zip file to have.
- Choose whether you want the file to be PC Compatible or Mac Specific.
- Once you click OK, YemuZip will automatically zip the file for you.
